The compromises made here are certainly the only way this story could have made its way to consoles, and for that reason, I don’t think Doki Doki Literature Club should have made its way to consoles at all. The original game is still free on Steam and runs on every potato-quality laptop, PC, or Mac. I would recommend anyone who is able to skip this new Plus edition and play this groundbreaking horror game the way it was originally intended.

The game does come with the warning that it is not suitable for children or the easily disturbed, but its easy accessibility as a free-to-play game and viral nature has made parents nervous. Other than the new storyline, the mod includes over 6 hours of playable content, with new artwork and music to enjoy while you play. Oxenfree is a 3rd person single player game that’s equal parts coming-of-age tale and supernatural thriller.
The game will move the player’s cursor of its own accord, delete options, and twist time and space. Doki Doki Literature Club holds a virtual knife to the player’s working throat and doesn’t let up. But there’s not much choice other than to just continue your descent into madness. There’s no inkling as to whether or not the game will return to normal, and there’s no escape. In a game that is crafted from limited dialogue boxes and a small option box here and there, there isn’t anywhere to run to.

This is a game you will tell everyone about when you’re finished playing it, and at the same time, just like this humble reviewer, you won’t want to share why. For less than $20, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is a highly recommended and very unique gaming experience.
